Daycare, Synagouge & Community Centre

Vaughan, Ontario

This project introduces an 11,000 square foot, three-storey addition designed to accomodate Community Centre incuding synagogue and daycare. The design preserves the historic synagogue as the heart of the site while enhancing its role as a cultural and community hub. The new addition is expressed through sleek, solid forms that convey permanence while maintaining a refined and welcoming character. A natural stone feature wall anchors the front façade, contrasted by expansive vertical glazing that draws light deep into the interior and emphasizes the building’s civic presence. Stucco cladding is applied to the secondary façades, balancing the composition with a lighter, more streamlined finish. Together, these materials establish a contemporary architectural identity that feels both modern and timeless.

The addition has been carefully integrated to stand alongside the existing heritage structure, creating a dialogue between old and new. The natural stone was deliberately chosen to complement the warmth of the original brick, forging a visual continuity that unites the two forms. By preserving the synagogue and framing it within a broader campus of spaces for worship, learning, and community gathering, the project strengthens its role as a focal point for the surrounding neighborhood. Nestled within the well-established residential fabric of Vaughan, the expanded community centre responds not only to its immediate context but also to the city’s larger cultural landscape, blending modern design aspirations with respect for heritage and tradition.
